Welcome Samantha (SB)! Tell us about yourself and what brought you to Nimble.

SB: I recently graduated from Kennesaw State University, where I studied graphic communications, and I’ve been working as a barista at Barnes & Noble. I also keep busy running my small business, Aeris Creations, a digital shop of illustrations and handmade creations, including polymer clay jewelry.

When a family friend told me that Nimble. was looking for a summer intern, I was immediately interested because I’d been hoping to find an opportunity to gain more real-world experience working on a variety of projects with a close-knit team. Based on my quick online research, everyone at Nimble. seemed talented and really passionate about design. The work environment looked great too.

You are a recent graduate. Tell us what led you to design.

SB: I was always an artsy kid and realized early on that I love making things. In high school—here in Marietta—I discovered the International Baccalaureate Career Program in Graphic Design, which helped me sharpen my skills and gave me confidence that I’d found the right educational and career path.

In this role, I’m excited to learn more about the design process, from meeting the client and figuring out who they are and their goals all the way through to the finished product.

In terms of specific skills, I’m eager to dive deeper into web design and animation—and generally get more immersed in the digital world of design.

Best advice you’ve ever received?

SB: “It’s okay if you don’t know everything.”

Honestly, I can’t remember who told me this, but it’s so relevant to my internship. The whole purpose of this is to learn. It’s hard not to be a perfectionist and think you need to know everything right now.

Samantha is a recent KSU Graphic Communications grad

Favorite design skill to flex?

SB: Probably typography—especially hand-lettered type. For fun, I’ll sometimes copy down a font and draw it out. At my second job as a barista, my manager has given me free rein to design the menu chalkboards, and my hand-lettering skills definitely come in handy.

Passions outside of design and illustration?

SB: Making polymer clay jewelry and doing all the things that go into owning and running a small business takes up a lot of my time. I also enjoy thrift shopping—especially at local vintage consignment stores, like Marina Marina at Marietta Square. And having been a barista for almost two years now, I’ve gotten into educating myself on how to make a good cup.

As an artist, it’s hard not to want to pick up every hobby imaginable.

Bucket list projects currently occupying your notebook?

SB:

Short-term: To organize the spare room that functions as an art space at my house. A daunting task, for sure.

Long-term: My pipe dream is to open a cat café.

A current project I’m excited about is collaborating with my high school English teacher to illustrate some of his stories and transform them into a series of children’s books.

What motivates me to come into work each day…

SB: Knowing that today is another day I get to spend at this cool company in the field I’m interested in.

Every day is a new experience. I get to collaborate with amazing people and see their day-to-days. And I’ve got my own exciting projects I’m able to work on. This internship provides just the right amount of structure and support—balanced by the freedom to create and explore independently.

Ask me about _________.

SB: My cats, Marley and Mavis. My mantra is: Cats. Coffee. Creativity.
